“ELAH”

“ELAH”

 The One God has been addressed by different names in Bible:

“ELAH” is the name for God, used about 70 times in the Old Testament. It is very similar to Arabic “Allah” or ‘Eelah’. إِلٰهَ  Elahh [hla]‘ (Aramaic; el-aw’): corresponding to God. [Arabic Bible uses ‘Allah’ for God] In Hebrew [hwla] ‘elowahh el-o’-ah; probably prolonged (emphat.) from [la]‘el ale; a deity or the Deity:–God, god. Again, when combined with other words, we see different attributes of God. Some examples: Elah Yerush’lem – God of Jerusalem: (Ezra;7:19), Elah Yisrael – God of Israel: (Ezra;5:1), Elah Sh’maya – God of Heaven:(Ezra 7:23). Elah Sh’maya V’Arah – God of Heaven and Earth: (Ezra;5:11).

A person completing this module will be able to correctly
identify the specific usages of >AL< in the Bible.

AL is normally translated as ON. In reality it has 6
meanings.This module also beautifully illustrates how
our early commentaries complement each other; what one
commentator misses the other supplements.

Most people think that the Hebrew word AL means ON.
In reality the Hebrew word AL has 6 meanings. They are...

In todays unit we present LISTS showing that AL
can mean AFTER.

Please pay special attention to the footnote which shows
how the early authorities very often COMPLEMENTED each
other (vs DISAGREED)

This completes this module. The GRAND SUMMARY will be posted
SATURADAY NIGHT. As I indicated we will now be presenting a few
short modules to provide contrast to the month we spent on THE.

=============Examples where the Hebrew AL means AFTER=========

 The Hebrew word AL has 6 meanings. A lesser known meaning is
 AFTER. In the verses below we have translated AL as AFTER.
 Verse references that end with a letter (e.g. Gn19-17a) refer
 to translations brought by Rashi. Note that this nuance of AL,
 namely, AL means AFTERWARDS, is brought by RASHI but not by
 RADACK. Thus we have an interesting insight into how the
 great early authorities complement each other in their works.*1

AFTER Nu28-24 Offer these Passover offerings AFTER the Daily
AFTER Nu28-10 The Sabbath offering AFTER the daily offering
================================================================

---------------------------NOTES--------------------------------
*1 Rashi explicitly says that this is a new meaning of the Hebrew
   word AL---which according to Rashi can means MILVAD.

   MILVAD is usually translated as BESIDES. Thus Nu06-20b would
   be translated as THE PRIEST WAIVES THEM BESIDES THE BREAST
   However after examining both Rashi and the other verses we
   think that AFTER is a better translation that is more
   consistent with both the Biblical text and Rashi.

   Rashi explicitly says that these occurences of AL have a
   connotation of EXTRANESS which would correspond more to
   a translation of AFTER rather than BESIDES. Furthermore the
   intent of say Lv03-05a is that one should OFFERING THE
   PEACE OFFERING AFTER THE DAILY OLAH.

IN Gn19-17a your fleeing should be INvolved with your life*6*7
IN Gn27-40 your life shall be INvolved with the sword*6

NOTES
=====

*6
EXAMPLE 8: Gn19-17a your fleeing should
                    be INvolved with your life

   These last two examples probably appear STRETCHED to the
   reader. A more flowing translation would be
   -----------------------------------
   flee FOR your life
   -----------------------------------

   -----------------------------------
   you will live BY your sword
   -----------------------------------

   Those readers who speak Hebrew know that The Hebrew letter
   BETH when prefixed to a word can mean IN, FOR, BY etc.
   Thus it is difficult to UNIFORMLY translate all these
   verses the same way into English. To approximate this
   Hebrew Uniformity we have translated all verses with the
   word IN.

*7 Rashi points out that the sentence emphasizes that he should
   ---------------------------------------
   Flee to save his LIFE, not his PROPERTY
   ---------------------------------------
================================================================

---------------------------NOTES--------------------------------

*1 This list affords us a beautiful example of how the early
   Jewish commentaries complemented each other. Radack only
   lists the first 5 meanings in his excellent book THE ROOTS,
   while Rashi also lists a 6th meaning, AL can mean AFTER.
   A list of examples for each of these meanings is provided
   below

*2 Lv24-07
   Radack says the incense was placed NEAR the stack of bread.
   Rashi seems to indicate that the incense was placed ON TOP
   of each stack. Thus this appears to be a controversy of
   the Rishonim on a legal matter.

*3 Gn49-13b
   Rashi has 2 points: (a) The Hebrew word AL means NEAR; (b)
   the word THIGH means BORDER.
   See http://www.RashiYomi.Com/ex25-31a.htm which brings
   the following Rashis where THIGH means BORDER:Ex25-31d,
   Ex40-22a, Ex40-22b, Lv01-11a.

*4 These verses have both the Hebrew words EL and AL in parallel
   and they both mean TO.

*5 RADACK suggests that a proper translation would be
   --------------------------------------------------
   God will lead us UNTIL the day of death
   --------------------------------------------------
   However Radack brings NO other examples where the Hebrew

        RECAP OF THE 6 MEANINGS OF the FROM YESTERDAY
        =============================================
        Hi everybody
        Yesterdays posting went out quickly. I had to
        summarize over a month of postings. The summary
        at top was missing.

        So....

        * I am attaching the summary of the 6 (not 4)
          usages of THE here.

        * I am updating the Rashi calendar tonight.
          At about 12 PM (EST) you can find the updated
          summary of THE (along with correction of
          other typos)

        * We spent about a month on the last module.
          To achieve some variety we will now lightly
          spend a shorter amount of time on some
          shorter topics.

        * Today we start with the 6 meanings of
          the Hebrew word AL.
        =============================================

=======The word THE can have the following meanings=============

 These are the 6 basic usages of the word THE. Each usage is
 illustrated with an example. Further LISTS of examples are
 presented in the URL, http://www.RashiYomi.Com/the-35.htm

================================================================
THE CAN MEAN VERSE TEXT OF VERSE The Verse means
============= ======== ===================  ===================
A proper noun Ex23-16c THE HARVEST holiday Succoth*1
Pointing Dt31-19a Write THE SONG The SONG in Dt32*2
Established Ex19-11b THE gods*3 The major religions
SubSpecies Ex08-02a THE SPECIAL frogs e.g jumping frogs*4
The best Dt19-03a THE BEST road The THRUWAY*5
An Idiom Gn09-24a THE Small Smallest*6

NOTES
=====
*1 A HARVEST Holiday would mean a holiday on any harvest.
   THE HARVEST Holiday is focused--it refers to Succoth

*2 Thus THE SONG points to the SONG in the next chapter

*3 THE gods refer to the KNOWN and ESTABLISHED religions

*4 Thus the phrase THE (SPECIAL) FROGS (vs FROGS) refers
   to a special species of JUMPING FROGS which particularly
   humiliated Egypt

*5 The BEST ROAD is of course the THRUWAY

*6 The phrase THE SMALL is used to denote the SMALLEST. The
   etymology of such an idiom should be clear
